Lecture: Martian radio occultation experiments with the Yinghuo-1 mission
Two kinds of radio occultation experiments will be performed with the YH-1 Mars mission to derive the Mars ionosphere electron density profiles and the neutral atmospheric profiles of temperature, density and pressure. The first experiment will be done using the radio link between YH-1 and Phobos-Grunt with dual frequencies of 400/800 MHz, which will be very sensitive to the ionospheric measurements. The second experiment is the traditional occultation experiment carried out in many previous planetary missions before, which will use the radio downlink between the YH-1 satellite and the deep space station on the Earth with the single X-band frequency. The two types of radio occultation experiments, using very different ideas and techniques, will allow us to investigate further the martian ionosphere and neutral atmosphere, especially the night-side ionosphere. Their inversion principles and simulation results will be presented.
