This sequence illustrates the propagation of a corotating interaction region (CIR) from Earth to Mars.

A CIR is a compression region between fast- and slow-moving solar wind streams. In a study carried out by Yong Wei and collaborators, a CIR was used as a 'marker' to pinpoint the same region in the solar wind as it propagated from Earth to Mars.
