On 8 January, after its removal from the Large Space Simulator earlier that day, the Herschel flight model spacecraft is placed on top of the flight adapter of the Ariane 5 launcher for a fit check.
By means of an overhead crane, Herschel was very carefully lowered onto the flight adapter (metal ring), resting on a ground support stand.
