The 'collect and collapse' model

A schematic view of the so-called 'collect and collapse' model. In this scenario the formation of a new generation of stars is triggered by the expansion of an HII region which is being ionised and blown by a massive star from a previous generation. This model was first proposed by Elmegreen & Lada in 1977.
