Re-scoping the Long Term Science Programme: Letter of the Director of the Science Programme (23/11/01); Report by the SSAC Chairman (25/02/02)

25 March 2002

On 14-15 November 2001, an ESA Council meeting at Ministerial level was held in Edinburgh. The level of resources, i.e., the funds allocated to the ESA Science Programme for the next 5 years, were insufficient to carry out the Long Term Programme as approved in the Science Programme Committee (SPC) of ESA in October 2000.

The first reaction by the Director of the Science Programme was the letter he sent on 23 November 2001 to the SPC Delegates and to the members of the advisory structure, namely the Astronomy Working Group (AWG), Solar System Working Group (SSWG), Fundamental Physics Advisory Group (FPAG) and Space Science Advisory Committee (SSAC).

The situation is of interest to all friends of the ESA Science Programme and indeed of European space science. If you feel appropriate to give any inputs, you can contact the members of the advisory structure in your Country (or outside) and the message will be relayed.

Proposals due: 24 April 2002.
