A closer encounter with Mars

Some of the clearest pictures of Mars ever were captured by the HubbleSpace Telescope during the planet's recent closest approach to Earth. NASA made them public to commemorate thesecond anniversary of the landing of its Mars Pathfinder mission.HST's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 took these pictures between 27 April and 6 May, when Mars was 54 million kilometres from Earth.
