Call for Ideas for Research Opportunities on the Deep Space Gateway

Call for Ideas for Research Opportunities on the Deep Space Gateway

The European Space Agency (ESA) invites members of the science community in Europe to propose ideas for research that could be performed on the Deep Space Gateway, a crewed spaceship in lunar vicinity.

The Deep Space Gateway is a strategic platform that is being prepared by the International Space Station partner agencies to be humanity’s next step beyond Low-Earth Orbit and out into the Solar System. Operations would take place during the 2020’s in the vicinity of the Moon.

With the present Call, ESA is consulting the science community to identify the research opportunities offered by this crewed platform, and to specify which capabilities are needed to enable this research.

Research areas may fall into the following broad categories: Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Solar System Science, Earth Sciences, and Astronomy and Astrophysics, as well as technology and other areas of a more applied nature.

A document (pdf, 499 KB) with further details of this call and containing important information about the Deep Space Gateway and its expected resources and capabilities for research can be found here. (See also the Documentation list in the right-hand menu.)

The submissions received through the call will be presented and discussed at a workshop to be held at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC), The Netherlands, on 5-6 December 2017. Details of this workshop can be found here.
