Living the Leonids

Date: 17 November 1999

Meteor counts by ESA teams (left) and USAF/NASA/CRESTech (right) The data shown in the left-hand figure give the number of Leonids per hour calculated by a software that is reading the images of two video cameras located in Southern Spain. Camera 1 (red curve) is at the Sierra Nevada Observatory and is operated by Detlef Koschny (ESTEC). Camera 2 (green curve) is on top of Calar Alto and is operated by Joe Zender (ESTEC). The data shown in the right-hand figure give the number of Leonids per hour as provided by a joint USAF/NASA/CRESTech campaign. They are operating an array of radars in Alert, Canada (83 deg latitude!) and a number of telescopes located between Israel and the Pacific.
