The in-situ exploration of icy regions, on planetary bodies, like the Martian polar caps or the entre surface of the Jovian moon Europa, require new strategies for instrument carrier developments. Subsurface regions are of high scientific interest.

A mole-type carrier needs to be developed which exploits melting or other techniques to penetrate to large depths without using large power resources which are naturally limited in polar regions. In addition to the pure functionality of penetrating ice layers this tool has to provide enough room to accommodate scientific payload instruments in- or outside the main body.
