Back XMM launch date

XMM launch date

24 September 1998

Following a detailed status review of the XMM scientific instruments by our Director of the Scientific Programme, the launch date of 21 January 2000, 13:13 UTC has been selected.

The X-ray Multi-Mirror satellite (XMM) is an observatory in the soft X-rays portion of the electromagnetic spectrum to be launched by Ariane-5. By virtue of its large collecting area telescope and highly eccentric orbit, it will allow for long observations of X-ray sources with an unprecedented sensitivity.
