First system validation test of XMM successful

21 March 1999

The first system validation test of XMM took place last week between the spacecraft located in ESTEC (The Netherlands) and the control centre in ESOC (Germany). During this week of tests the spacecraft was controlled from ESOC as if it was already in orbit.

The system validation was very successful, both in terms of technical results and as a demonstration of joint team effort. The tests involved engineers from prime contractor Dornier, the ESA project team at ESTEC and the operations team at ESOC. As the accompanying pictures show, team motivation remained high throughout six intensive days.
