Composite Images of HCG16

Date: 29 January 2000
Satellite: XMM-Newton
Depicts: X-ray and Optical images of HCG16
Copyright: ESA

An X-ray image of the Hickson Galaxy Group (HCG16) shown in false colour X-ray from the EPIC-PN instrument on the right, and through optical monitor V filter on the left. The ability to record images simultaneously over a range of wavelengths is an important first for XMM, allowing new X-ray discoveries to be placed immediately in the context of more familiar images from the optical portion of the spectrum.
