Cassini caught in Hyperion's electron beam 16 October 2014 Static electricity is known to play an important role on the airless, dusty Moon, but evidence of surface charging on other objects in the Solar System has been elusive. However, a new analysis of data from the international Cassini mission has revealed that the orbiter was briefly bathed in a beam of electrons coming from the electrostatically charged surface of Saturn's moon, Hyperion. The Cassini-Huygens mission is a NASA/ESA/ASI mission to explore the Saturnian system. The ESA component consists largely of the Huygens probe, which entered the atmosphere of Saturn's largest moon, Titan, and descended under parachute down to the surface. The Cassini spacecraft is undertaking an extensive exploration of the Saturnian system with its rings and many satellites. Cassini completed its initial four-year mission to explore the Saturn System in June 2008 and the first extended mission, called the 'Cassini Equinox Mission', in September 2010. A second extended mission, called the 'Cassini Solstice Mission' will continue until September 2017; this will allow scientists to study the Saturnian system until the summer solstice is passed in May 2017. By the time this new extension is completed the Cassini mission will have covered (since it arrived in the system) one half of a Saturnian year.
Titan's subsurface reservoirs modify methane rainfall 01 September 2014 The international Cassini mission has revealed hundreds of hydrocarbon lakes and seas spread across the icy surface of Saturn's moon Titan, mostly in its polar regions. While most of the liquid in the lakes is thought to be replenished by rainfall from clouds in the moon's atmosphere, the cycling of liquid throughout Titan's crust and atmosphere is still not well understood. The active Sun boosts Titan's outer atmosphere 15 October 2013 The NASA-ESA-ASI Cassini spacecraft has been observing the Saturn system, including the giant satellite Titan, for more than 9 years. A detailed analysis of Cassini data has now confirmed predictions that the density of Titan's ionosphere is directly linked to the 11 year cycle of solar activity. Read more

Announcement of Opportunity 2014 01 July 2014 The scientific community is invited to submit proposals for participation to the Cassini-Huygens mission through the Participating Scientists (PS) programme. This Announcement of Opportunity (AO) is issued jointly by ESA, NASA, and ASI. A brief statement of work is due on 28 July 2014; the full proposal is due on 26 September 2014. Read more
