Mercator Projection of Titan Views at Different Altitudes

Mercator Projection of Titan Views at Different Altitudes

Date: 05 May 2006
Satellite: Huygens
Depicts: DISR images of Titan taken during the descent
Copyright: ESA/NASA/JPL/University of Arizona

These images are Mercator projections of Huygens's view of Titan, taken at 4 different altitudes (in a Mercator projection the cardinal directions are kept intact – they cross at right angles – but surface areas are distorted). The images were taken during descent by the Descent Imager/Spectral Radiometer (DISR) on board Huygens, on 14 January 2005.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project between NASA, ESA and Italy's ASI space agency.
