ESA Science & Technology - Saturn in July 2008

Saturn as viewed on 23 July 2008 by the international Cassini mission, which spent 13 years at the planet. This composite image was obtained by combining 30 images taken by Cassini's wide-angle camera in different filters. Six of Saturn's moons are also visible: Titan, Janus, Mimas, Pandora, Epimetheus, and Enceladus.

Data collected by Cassini's magnetometer and plasma spectrometer shortly after that, in September 2008, have later revealed the unexpected phenomenon of magnetic reconnection on the planet's dayside magnetodisc. Cassini concluded its mission in September 2017 with an epic plunge into the atmosphere of Saturn.
