Smoothed spacecraft potential measurements at a collisionless shock

Date: 05 April 2004
Satellite: Cluster
Depicts: Smoothed spacecraft potential measurements

Smoothed spacecraft potential measurements -ΦSC from the four Cluster spacecraft (each as a different color: black: 1; red: 2; green: 3; purple: 4), at a collisionless shock. The time shift between encounters on the 4 spacecraft is used to compute the shock normal vector and speed. Notice the coherence of the first cycle of the overshoot. [Bale et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 265004 (2003)].
