Back Quasi-Perpendicular Shock Propagation

Quasi-Perpendicular Shock Propagation

Date: 14 May 2007
Copyright: B. Lembege and Ph. Savoini

Time animation result of the main magnetic field component (Bz) obtained from a 1-D PIC (Particle In Cell) full electromagnetic simulation. The quasi-perpendicular shock propagates with an oblique angle (=57°) defined between the shock normal and the upstream magnetostatic, in a supercritical Mach regime (Ma=8.8). A constant reformation of the shock is seen as it propagates from the left to the right hand side in the animation.

Y-axis = strength of the Bz component
X-axis = altitude in arbitraty units
