Verifying the frozen-in condition during current sheet thinning

Date: 16 October 2008
Satellite: THEMIS
Copyright: J. McFadden et al.

A comparison between the electric field and -Vi × B, observed by THEMIS during the current sheet thinning. The remarkable disagreement between the two quantities (bottom three panels) indicates violation of the "frozen-in" condition (encircled in the plot).

This result was presented by J. McFadden et al. at the First Joint Cluster-THEMIS workshop, held 23-26 September 2008 at the University of New Hampshire, Durham, USA.
