Date: 04 March 2010 Satellite: Euclid Depicts: Effects of lensing mass on an image Copyright: Credit for Abell 2218: NASA, ESA, and Johan Richard (Caltech, USA) Show in archive: true
(Left) Illustrations of the effect of a lensing mass on a circularly symmetric image. Weak lensing elliptically distorts the image, flexion provides an arc-ness and strong lensing creates large arcs and multiple images. (Right) Galaxy cluster Abell 2218, strongly lensed arcs can be seen in around the cluster. Every background galaxy is weakly lensed.
