The light we see with our eyes is just one type of radiation that carries energy through the Universe. Scientists refer to light and its associated radiation as the electromagnetic spectrum. It consists of radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation, visible light, ultraviolet light, X-rays and gamma rays. Each type of electromagnetic radiation is produced by different physical processes and so all carry their own privileged information about the Universe.
