Back INTEGRAL detection of a Supergiant Fast X-ray Transient (XTE J1739-302)

INTEGRAL detection of a Supergiant Fast X-ray Transient (XTE J1739-302)

Date: 21 June 2010
Satellite: INTEGRAL
Depicts: XTE J1739-302
Copyright: Sguera et al. (2005)

The sequence above shows an outburst of the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transient, XTE J1739-302 (identified with the green circle). Each frame is an INTEGRAL ISGRI image obtained during a 2000 s exposure. The source is not detected in the first frame (left-most image), is detected at a high level significance in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th frames, and 'disappears' again in the fifth frame. This short, sharp outburst behaviour is characteristic of SFXTs.

A weak persistent source (1E 1740.7-2942) is also visible in the field of view.

Further details can be found in V. Sguera et al., "INTEGRAL observations of recurrent fast X-ray transient sources", A&A, 2005, 444, 221
