'Touching the Edge of the Universe' - planetarium show featuring Herschel and Planck

8 May 2009

The world premier of a spectacular new planetarium show, presented by ESA, took place on 7 May 2009 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Two of ESA's major astronomical spacecraft, Herschel and Planck, take the starring role in this brand new show premiered during the International Year of Astronomy.

The International Year of Astronomy 2009 marks 400 years since Galileo Galilei first turned his simple optical telescope to the night sky. Using 360 degree projection, 'Touching the Edge of the Universe' immerses audiences in a journey from the time of Galileo to today’s cutting edge space astronomy missions, Herschel and Planck. During the show viewers experience an entirely new view of the cosmos and see footage shot on location at various ESA Establishments.

The world premier of 'Touching the Edge of the Universe' took place on 7 May in Berlin, Vienna and Lucern. Grand openings of this German language version of the show will follow on 8, 9, 11, 12, 13 and 14 May, in planetaria throughout Germany, Austria and Switzerland. An English language version will be released in June.

'Touching the Edge of the Universe' was developed in partnership with more than 30 German-language planetaria across Germany, Austria and Switzerland with digital production expertise from the creative team at the Media Faculty of the Kiel University of Applied Sciences, Kiel, Germany.
