ESA materials bring Herschel and Planck into the classroom

8 July 2009

To mark the dual launch of two major astronomical spacecraft, Herschel and Planck, ESA has participated in the production of a series of education materials related to these missions. Originally published in collaboration with the respected German astronomy publication Sterne und Weltrum, all materials are now available in English as well as German and are available to download for free from the ESA Education website.

The launch of Herschel and Planck marks a sizeable European contribution to the International Year of Astronomy 2009.  The exciting science of both these missions can now be brought into the classroom through a wide variety of education materials including; background information, quizzes, games and videos. Materials cover numerous mission-related topics such as electromagnetic radiation, the Big Bang, orbits and the Lagrange points.

Prior to the start of the International Year of Astronomy 2009, Sterne und Weltrum together with ESA produced a special edition of the magazine dedicated to Herschel and Planck. This edition was distributed to German-speaking schools across Europe. All material produced for the magazine has now been translated into English. To bring Herschel and Planck into the classroom download the education materials here.
