Observing conditions for 2009 total solar eclipse

Date: 22 July 2009
Location: Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, China

On Wednesday 22 July 2009 the longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century took place. The location of the Mars Advanced School, held 20-24 July in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, China, lay along the path of totality. Teachers and students of the Mars Advanced School took time out to observe the total solar eclipse. Unfortunately the local weather did not cooperate well with rain and clouds. This photo shows the sky before totality. Despite these observing conditions the totality phase lasting several minutes was a very special experience, with the sudden onset of a real night-time atmosphere.
