The olivine-rich terrain in the vicinity of Jezero crater

This high-resolution 3D model shows terrain on the surface of Mars in the vicinity of Jezero crater, the future landing site for NASA's 2020 Mars Perseverance rover.

Two new studies recently characterised the large quantities of olivine and carbonate minerals known to exist in this region, mapping their extent, age, distribution, and likely method of formation. The olivine/carbonate-bearing layers are shown here in blue. This visualisation uses false colour imagery and a digital terrain model from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.
