XMM lower module testing completed

21 January 1999

The XMM lower module was taken out of the Large Space Simulator (LSS) at ESTEC yesterday, Thursday 21 January, after successful completion of performance tests under vacuum at high and low temperatures.

Meanwhile at Dornier, Friedrichshaven, the ESA project team, was able to view the upper module focal plane assembly, which is now complete. The thermal blanket that isolates XMM's sensitive instruments from the harsh space environment is now being installed by Austrian Aerospace personnel.

The upper module will leave Dornier, on 8 February, arriving in ESTEC on 9 February.
