    The JWST instrument suite

An overview of the JWST instrument suite

JWST will carry four science instruments:

    • NIRSpec
Near-Infrared Spectrograph, provided by ESA with some elements provided by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. A wide field (3' x 3') multi-object near- infrared spectrometer covering wavelengths 0.6 - 5 µm at spectral resolutions of R~100, R~1000 and R~2700.
    • MIRI
Mid-Infrared Instrument, provided by a consortium of ESA Member States and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. A combined mid-infrared camera (1.3' x 1.7') and spectrograph (R~100 and R~3000) covering wavelengths 5 - 28 µm.
    • NIRCam
      Near-Infrared Camera, provided by the University of Arizona. A wide field (2.2' x 4.4') near-infrared camera covering wavelengths 0.6 - 5 µm.
    • FGS/TFI
Fine Guidance System/Tunable filter Imager, provided by the Canadian Space Agency. The Fine Guidance System will include a near-infrared tunable filter imaging capability (2.3' x 2.3'; R~100) covering wavelengths 1.5 - 5 µm.

The four instruments are housed within the Integrated Science Instrument Module (ISIM).
