This view of Mars against the backdrop of our Galaxy was taken by the wide angle camera (WAC) of the OSIRIS instrument on 3 December 2006, during the last series of instrument check-outs. In the image, Mars is heavily overexposed, surrounded by a halo of scattered light.
During the Mars swing-by at the end of February, OSIRIS will make a series of close-up observations of the planet as well as its two moons.
