A powerful motive behind the Huygens Probe to Titan is the scientist's wish to see what carbon molecules Nature makes from simple gases. Titan is far too cold for life, and water is scarce. The atmosphere and surface of Saturn's peculiar moon may nevertheless contain many chemicals of the kind that existed on the young Earth, and stocked the primaeval soup in which the first living organisms appeared.
