The Euclid spacecraft will carry a payload module (depicted in this drawing) with a 1.2-m-diameter telescope and two state-of-the art scientific instruments: a visible-light camera and a near-infrared camera/spectrometer.

An external baffle – the cylindrical structure – will protect the optical surfaces and the instruments from stray light and will provide a thermally stable environment.

Euclid is designed to provide new insights into the 'dark side' of the Universe, namely 'dark matter' and 'dark energy', both key components of the current model for the formation and evolution of the Universe.

Airbus Defence & Space in France will deliver the complete payload module incorporating the telescope feeding the two science instruments being developed by the Euclid Consortium.

The prime contractor for the mission is Thales Alenia Space, Italy.
