LASCO observes a Halo Ejection Event

LASCO observes a Halo Ejection Event

Date: 07 April 1997
Copyright: ESA

Movie of a halo mass ejection event that occured on 7 April 1997 as observed by the LASCO-C2 coronograph onboard SOHO. A coronagraph observes the solar atmosphere by blocking out the brightness of the sun itself. The white circle indicates the size of the Sun. The movie starts just before the eruption. The first stage of the eruption is seen in the upper right-hand corner. The eruption proceeds into what LASCO scientists recognize as a halo event: you can see a brightening around the entire Sun instead of in just one direction.
