Be an INTEGRAL astronomer: Task 2

Be an INTEGRAL astronomer: Task 2

Now you see them - now you don't. When were all of these sources "off"?

The objects in the following table are a group of variable sources located in the near vicinity of the Galactic Centre. These objects vary on all possible timescales, from milliseconds to days, years to decades.

Using the IBIS/ISGRI 18-40 keV data from 2005 to 2009, identify one (or more) period(s) when the sources were all “off” – i.e. when they were not detected.

Indicate how the X-ray emission of these sources compares to that from the Crab. (Hint: compare the average and extreme count rates for the sources – see note at end of Task 1.)

Source name Source type Data
1A 1742-294 Neutron star X-ray binary Link to data
1E 1740.7-2942 Black-hole binary, micro-quasar Link to data
KS 1741-293 Neutron star X-ray binary transient Link to data
SLX 1744-299 Neutron star X-ray binary Link to data
