IPC gives go-ahead for Rosetta

29 November 1998

ESA's Industrial Policy Committee (IPC), meeting in Paris on 26 November, has given the final go-ahead for placing the Rosetta development contract with Dornier Satellitensysteme, Germany.

Following an initial design phase, work will now continue with the manufacturing of the spacecraft.

The objective of the Rosetta mission, scheduled for launch by Ariane-5 in January 2003, is to rendezvous with comet Wirtanen in 2011. On its eight-year journey to the comet, the spacecraft will pass close to two asteroids, Otawara and Siwa.
