Comet 67P/C-G observed with the Very Large Telescope - 11 August 2014

Date: 08 September 2014
Satellite: Rosetta
Depicts: Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko
Copyright: Colin Snodgrass/ESO/ESA

This sequence of images shows a crowded star field towards the centre of our Galaxy, the Milky Way, observed on 11 August 2014 with one of the 8 m-diameter telescopes of the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile. In the foreground, comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko passes through the stars. The comet is difficult to spot, even with a giant telescope like the VLT, but it can be seen here moving across the middle of the frame.
