Exploring Imhotep

Date: 21 January 2015
Satellite: Rosetta
Depicts: Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko
Copyright: See below

Part of the Imhotep region on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko's large lobe; the image was taken by the OSIRIS narrow-angle camera on 5 September 2014. The region shows a wide range of complex terrain: smooth terrain (A), layering of this material at its margin (B), smooth material on topographically higher surfaces (C), circular structures (D), and layered consolidated material (E) rising towards a 650 m-diameter raised semicircular structure (G). Fracturing of the consolidated material is evident throughout (e.g. F).
