SMART-1 first orbited the Earth in an outward spiralling orbit, achieved by repeated firings of the ion drive. Eventually SMART-1 crossed the first Lagrange point of the Earth-Moon system after which it was captured by the Moon's gravity and entered Lunar orbit.
