SOHO shows magnificant solar fireworks

27 January 2000

Over the weekend of 8-10 January, a fortunate turn of events enabled the SOHO/EIT instrument to capture a magnificant solar firework display. Spectacular movies and high-resolution images are available on the SOHO hot shots page.

While SOHO was in Coarse Roll Pointing mode during the weekend of 8-10 January, the Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) was observing in a mode with higher-than-usual telemetry rate, as the Large Angle Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) instrument had its doors closed ready for key spacecraft manoeuvres prior to returning to normal operations.
