SMART-1 mated with launcher

SMART-1 mated with launcher

18 September 2003

Final assembly building, Kourou, French Guiana

Yesterday, September 17th, SMART-1 completed the first 30 metres of its trip to the Moon !

In an emotional moment we watched as SMART-1 was raised up into the heights of the BAF to meet the Ariane 5 launcher. The S/C looked very small, carrying its Ariane 5 mounting adapter as it raised the 30 metres up to the top of the launcher. Within an hour it was sitting tightly on the upper stage and the SES team could remove the hoisting blocks for the last time. Next time SMART-1 flies, it will not need a crane.

This morning the Solar Array protections were removed and the S/C was made ready for flight. It is right now awaiting to be enclosed by the 2.6 metre raising cylinder, which will carry the second passenger on top of SMART-1 (E-Bird).
